TALONs PRO Grip Review

I recently started running the Talon Pro Gun Grips for my duty and carry guns, and I must say, I am impressed with the improved Pro texture.

Previously, I have used the granulate textured grips for my duty and competition gun, and the rubberized grips for my carry guns. The granulate texture was great when shooting, but not an option for a gun you might carry IWB, and would tear up shirts over time when carrying outside the waistband. The rubberized texture on the other hand was ideal for concealed carry, and while it offered an enhancement over most stock pistol grips, it left something to be desired.

Enter Talons Pro texture.

According to Talon “The PRO texture combines the best characteristics of the granulate and rubber textures.” The Pro texture, which is made up of ground up rubber provides an aggressive grip for shooting that is also not going to irritate your skin while carrying concealed.

Installation

Thanks to the provided instructions, installation was straightforward. Simply remove the backing, stick the grips on, apply heat and you’re good to go. Helpful tip, if you use your wife’s hairdryer to set the adhesive, its a good idea to put it back (ask me how I know).

The grips adhered securely to my firearm, and the precision cutouts matched my gun's frame perfectly. Talon states that their grips will stay on for 1-3 years when applied properly. I have found this to be accurate. All of the guns that I have Talon grips on see daily use, and are still adhered well. I have also worked with guys that have had their grips on for so long that the edges had worn away from heavy use, but the rest of the grip is still solidly adhered.

When it comes time to replace your worn out grips, the old adhesive does not stay stuck on your gun like you might expect. Which makes clean up and replacement much easier.

Control and performance

One of the standout features of the Talon Pro grips is the enhanced control they offer. The texture provides an excellent grip surface without being overly aggressive. The added traction significantly improves your ability to maintain control and accuracy, especially with follow up shots or in wet conditions.

Having to shoot in wet conditions is when it really becomes necessary to have a more positive grip on your handgun. There are several factors that can affect your grip when it comes to moisture such as sweat, rain, mud, or in the worst case scenario, blood. Depending on what capacity you carry a firearm you may encounter one, or all of these at some point. If you’ve ever shot outdoors on a hot day with sweaty palms, you know that alone is enough to affect your grip while shooting. If you are not familiar with Will Petty of Centrifuge Training (@the_adventures_of_will.i.am), he was involved in a shooting a number of years ago. While he does not discuss the details on social media, he has posted pictures of his duty gun covered in mud from the incident. He now runs his guns with quality stippling. I would venture a guess that having to run a gun with muddy hands had something to do with that.

Why stick-on grips?

I know stippling is a popular option when looking to add texture to your firearm. While stippling can provide a good texture (and looks cool) there are some downsides to consider. First is cost. Depending on the company, you are looking at $100-$250 for quality stippling. Second, stippling does wear and smooth out over time requiring you to get it redone. Personally, I would rather spend that money on ammo or training.

Another thing to consider is that adding Talon grips is not a permanent upgrade. There are some guns I do not want to, or cannot easily modify (like my 1911s). If you’re a police officer, most departments will not allow you to permanently alter your issued firearm, in which case, adding aftermarket grips is your only option.

Fit

Another noteworthy aspect is the attention to detail in the design. The grips seamlessly integrate with the firearm's aesthetics, enhancing its overall appearance. The low-profile design doesn't add unnecessary bulk to the gun like a slip on rubber grip would,

Note: If you have a Glock with finger grooves like I do, you will have to cut 2 slots with a knife or scissors. Fortunately, Talon added cut lines on the backing paper that shows exactly where these cuts need to be made.

Conclusion

What sets the Talon Pro grips apart is their versatility. Whether you’re at the range, competing, or otherwise, the enhanced grip will translate to improved performance, control, and safety across the board.

The Talon Pro Gun Grips are a fantastic investment for any firearm enthusiast looking to upgrade their firearm. The combination of easy installation, durable materials, and enhanced control make these grips a standout choice. The attention to detail in design and the noticeable improvement in performance make them well worth the investment. I highly recommend the Talon Pro Gun Grips to anyone looking to take their shooting experience to the next level.
