Thyrm Switchback Review

Thyrm Switchback with Glock

The Thyrm SwitchBack is a flashlight accessory that has become increasingly popular among enthusiasts, outdoorsmen, law enforcement and military personnel. It is a simple, yet highly effective device that enhances the functionality of handheld lights. The SwitchBack is available for flashlight models from leading manufacturers such as Cloud Defensive, SureFire, and Streamlight.

Made from high-quality polymer material and designed to fit many popular flashlight models, the SwitchBack fits over the body of the flashlight and is secured in place by the tail cap.

One of the primary benefits of the SwitchBack is its ability to provide  better retention of the flashlight in a variety of situations, particularly with firearms. With the ring firmly in place, users can hold the flashlight with a more natural grip and without the risk of accidentally dropping it while searching or shooting. This is especially important for those who are using flashlights in high-stress situations, such as law enforcement or military operations.

With the increased popularity of WML’s (weapon mounted lights), you might be wondering why you would need a switchback. There are several reasons for this.

  1.  Many handguns, particularly EDC handguns such as revolvers, or the Glock 42, and 43 do not have a way to mount a WML.  The addition of a SwitchBack to your Flashlight essentially solves this problem which can aid in better target identification if necessary.

  2. Two is one and one is none.  Even if you do have a WML, batteries die, and lights malfunction.  Always at inopportune times.  With the SwitchBack, you still have the ability to maintain a two handed grip on your handgun, or rifle and illuminate your target.

  3. Some departments do not allow WML’s. There is a theory amongst some people that adding a light to a pistol is actually a disadvantage because it slows your draw time.  I know this because the previous RO at my old department was one of them.  Personally, I would trade a negligible decrease in draw time for proper target ID any day (or night) but that’s a different discussion.   Regardless, this school of thought does still exist, and some departments will not allow pistol lights on their department firearms.  In this case, a SwitchBack is your best option.

  4. Searching and Manipulation.  When searching with your handheld flashlight in one hand, and your handgun in the other, the Switchback allows for a quick transition to a two handed grip on your gun.  It also allows for two handed malfunction clearing, and reloading while maintaining your flashlight. It doesn’t take much dry practice to become proficient with this either.

  5. Deployment.  The position, and size of the ring on the SwitchBack makes accessing and deploying your handheld light from a pocket much easier.

  6. Gear acquisition.  When I started at my department, the range could not get a left handed holster for a light equipped G17 (they were on backorder).  For up to a year I had no other option when training in low light scenarios but to use my SwitchBack. Which is why I came to love this small piece of gear in the first place.

The SwitchBack also features a unique clip design that allows users to attach the flashlight to a variety of surfaces. This can be useful for hands-free illumination when working in tight spaces or when hiking or camping.  The SwitchBack is also designed with a releasable retention ring making it less likely to cause damage to your finger if you catch your flashlight on something or if someone grabs ahold of it.

Overall, the Thyrm SwitchBack is a highly versatile and practical accessory that enhances the functionality of handheld flashlights. It provides a secure grip, one-handed operation, and weapon manipulation. Its durable construction and compatibility with a variety of flashlight models make it a valuable addition to any kit.
